DEOGHAR UPDATE
Dear friends and family, Some of you have been asking for a written update from our recent triptoIndia in November!
It has been a difficult transition home for me (Ginny) physically, emotionally, and spiritually but I am just now starting to feel more adjusted! Our first trip we truly had no idea what to expect and it was such an adventure of sorts. This second trip felt solidifying in new ways in our call to India; in our calling to be advocates for the needy, as well as for the persecuted church.
Allow me to be transparent– I am in absolute awe and wonder of what the Lord is doing, and also turmoil as I feel the burden to carry this vision and see it through to it’s completed purpose. I am trying very hard to articulate the profound grief that I feel. I am usually the one who has words, but this time I don’t seem to be finding them easily. If I had to try and name this grief it would be a reverse-culture shock. I am not mostly talking about India, the country itself, although that's part of it. I am mostly referring to the culture of christianity and how we live out this gospel that we so readily claim. The church that is made up of believers in India is more generous than the American church can hardly fathom. They give from their lack and share readily everything they have. Their gratitude is astounding. Their faith is tested beyond any limits ours has endured in terms of cultural persecution, and yet they are steadfast and unwavering. They do not operate as we do in our individualistic culture, but they feel like one community, one family with open hearts who are wholly united in their purpose. I am making generalized statements, but bear with me because we all need a heart check. The church that we have experienced in India is not a sleeping church. They are very much awake, very much enduring the persecution that ignites real faith and true worship.
I was extremely sleep deprived on this particular trip, but it seemed to make it easier for me to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit since I was so desperate for his grace to sustain me! He said something profound to me during one car ride. He said that we so often times ask God, “What do you want me to do?” But this is the wrong question to ask, because the question itself is within the framework that we are somehow separate from Christ. The word says that we are one with him and in union with him! So the only question that we can rightly ask is, “Lord, what are you doing? And how can I join you in your work?”
That summarizes the work that he has called us to in India. It’s not our idea, it’s not our work, and we can’t take credit for any of it. It’s holy because it’s his work. It was supernatural in its initiation, and it will be supernatural through every process and through the completion of it. Jesus alone gets the glory and we are truly undeserving of joining him, but he calls us anyway! That’s the point isn't it? We cannot boast about anything but our weakness.
In the American church we have been so often baited and hooked with a gospel that is for us. The very nature of Christ is generosity; it is to give. It is to lay down one’s life. Let me be clear: The gospel is for us, but it is not to serve us. It is for us to serve Christ. If we do not care about
the things that he cares about, we are falling short. If the subconscious goal of our lives has somehow become to be comfortable, we are failing not only our calling but we are failing our brothers and sisters in Christ. They do not have the privilege of being comfortable. They do not have the “privilege” of being self-absorbed in their faith. You may not feel a call to India, but I believe that the call to you is the same– Jesus is looking for those who will say yes to sacrificial love. Those who are no longer living their christianity for themselves, for their glory, for what they can get out of it…but have chosen, however imperfectly, to live for the One who gave his life as a ransom for them. God wants to bless us, but that can never be our motive. Because when we inevitably experience loss of every kind we will become offended and bitter if that is our motive. I know; you can ask me what it’s like to live a selfish christian life. I’ve done
it. Isn’t it so cringey to type that out? Yet somehow it’s a very acceptable way to live as a christian. We cannot ask God to bless us for our own sake. We have to be willing to become vessels that pour out.
As many of you know from our first trip, we were able to connect with a pastor in the city of Deoghar, Pastor Alfred. He and his wife Sirin and son James (14) are faithful believers there in a particularly hard region for the gospel. Alfred himself suffers from a disability and walks with the use of a cane. Does that stop him from riding his motorbike all over Deoghar and even to Athmuria to share the gospel? Absolutely not. He continues to do the work of the Lord there with joy! He said when he first moved there several years ago, there was not even one other believer to gather with. Now they have a beautiful community that is growing there, and God has asked us personally to help them build a church building alongside them to serve as a gathering place, and in the future also a place of resource for the entire community and the surrounding villages. The village Athmuria that God spoke to me about in September 2024 is about 1.8 miles from the land where the church will be. We were able to go and visit this land and have a “ground-breaking ceremony” where we were able to participate in dedicating this place to Jesus and his glory! What an honor it is to come alongside these faithful people and build something beautiful. Just right down the road from this church site is a brand new government sponsored Ashram- a large hindu center for spiritual practices, essentially a hindu monastery. Much of the persecution there is politically motivated for nationalist and hindu agendas. I feel that this is so strategic of the Lord for this place and region! I love that he is in a sense, challenging these false gods and idols by allowing us to partner in his kingdom work! It’s just so amazing to be there in person and see it with our own eyes.

Dedicating the land together.

We were also incredibly privileged to spend the day with Pastor Alfred and his community and worship with them, pray with them, and encourage them that while they wait for a building, they themselves are the holy temple of the living God, filled with Him and lacking nothing! They truly are the light of the world shining brightly in the darkness, as Christ lives and moves through them. It felt like a dream just to be there with them and belong to the same Christ.
One of my favorite testimonies came from this day. As we laid hands on the sick and prayed for them, this precious older woman came up for prayer. She was experiencing vision loss. As we prayed over her, we asked our friend James who was translating to ask her if she was sensing anything or feeling anything in her body. She looked up and said in her native language, “He has lightning in his eyes.”
As of right now, we have around 30k to help fund this church building. They will need roughly 60K to bring it to completion. This will also serve as a
parsonage on the second level for Pastor Alfred and his family. Phase one will consist of digging a water well, beginning the foundation work, and
completing the first level for the church gathering place. Phase 2 will consist of finishing the second level as a living space for Alfred, Sirin, and James. Phase 1 is financially covered. We are now reaching out to you, our friends and family, to pray about and consider supporting our friends and this church community.
I have to say strongly that this is not us asking you to partner in building just another church. In America, we have churches everywhere. This is not the case in Deoghar. This church, when it is completed, although small, will have a very large impact. This articular region has very few public christian places to gather. Most gatherings are in the home. This will be a monumental and transformative place. A spiritual outpost in the region as well as a place of resources for the surrounding villages, even Athmuria! It will enable the gospel to go farther and reach into the unreached places where Jesus is desiring to make his name known. This is a very influential and strategic location where the light will shine directly into the darkness. We are unashamedly asking you to please pray about how you can support this vision.

Athmuria is a village that consists of great poverty. There is no school there. When we first traveled in March, there were no Christians there. As of now, thanks to Pastor Alfred, I believe there are now a few. This place is a strategic place that God has spoken that he desires to transform with his love and the revelation of Jesus.
I believe He is looking for laid-down lives who do not scorn the invitation of sacrifice but wholeheartedly cry out “Yes!” to the giving of their resources to advance the kingdom of God on the earth. Jesus himself said that the gospel would be preached to all nations and all people, and then the end would come. We have a lot of work to do, friends. There are still so many that are wandering in darkness and confusion.
But thanks be to God because Jesus is ever-pursuing them! And he is asking us to join him in his passion.
-Ginny

November 2025 Pakur update (James)
After landing in Kolkata at 2am, we crashed at a hotel for a bit, stopped to find an acoustic guitar for me to buy and have for the whole trip, Then we went to the first of the two cities we visited: Pakur. This is where Alex Sam and his
family live, where Everett Mission is based, and the Shiloh Residency (home for orphans) is located. There are currently 42 kids there, ages 4 to 1G. They have a decent bit of land, I’d guess between 5-10 acres, and are growing crops, raising livestock and becoming more self-sustainable. Pakur is a growing city, but Everett Mission is in a pretty rural location - farmland all around and a couple small villages in between their home and the city.
The main level of the Sams’ home is called “Bet-meraanen” (house of refreshing) and has a kitchen, dining/living space and 3-4 bedroom/bathroom suites. They use it to host visitors and ministers however they see fit. We shared every meal with them, and got to just be a part of the family. This is such a restful and refreshing place for us. Alex and his wife Sunita, his two daughters still at home (Grace and Allison), and another sister in Christ, Dolly, have become such close friends to us.

One of the highlights of our time in Pakur was getting to dedicate the completed roof structure over the women’s empowerment center - second story above the Shiloh Residency.
We raised a significant amount of the funds for the project through fundraisers back in Birmingham, including bake sales and art by Ginny & our kids, and me working hard to sell “be a good neighbor” hats to all of my friends, clients and colleagues. It was extremely humbling to get up on the roof as the representatives of all the people back home who generously gave to this project. We sang songs, prayed to dedicate the place to God, and all of the ladies + Alex and myself poured concrete in the last corner of the room and anointed it in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We had two dedication times - once with all of the kids and staff, and another time after the Sunday morning service with other pastors and believers from the surrounding community. Alex cracked me up telling me how seriously he was pushing the workers to be sure it was completed for our visit - both hilarious to me and humbling, as we feel like such a small part of everything God is doing there, yet they honor us.

Alex helped me understand a bit more specifically the purpose of this space. More than a decade ago, he felt God led Sunita and he to plant their ministry in Pakur, Jharkhand as it is an extremely prevalent area for the trafficking of children, for forced labor and mostly sexual exploitation. A majority of Everett Mission’s work is to love and serve the most vulnerable in their society (i.e. orphans and widows, or as Alex says “gospel in action”). The women’s empowerment center will be a safe place for vulnerable women to give birth, receive
post-partum care, and receive life/career skills if they wish, including literacy, computer skills, and trades such as sewing. Many of these women are coming out of trafficking or abusive/unsafe situations. To stand on the roof and think of the women that will come through that place, that will be honored, protected and empowered, was beyond humbling. They still have the finishing of the interior before it’s opened up to the surrounding community, but the structure is complete and the finish line in sight.
At Everett Mission, time with the children in the Shiloh Residency (directly next door to Alex’s home) will always be the main highlight. The children wake up around 5:30 every morning and gather in their common space to pray, worship and 1-by-1 stand up and read aloud (in English) through a chapter of the bible. In the evenings they gather for prayer and worship daily. They are all clearly growing so strong in the Lord, it is beautiful to see. Ginny and I got to join them for many of these times. I purchased an acoustic guitar before leaving Kolkata, so we were able to teach the kids some new songs and play/sing along with them. They taught us new songs as well that we will be teaching to the kids at our church in Birmingham! After the last morning gathering I attended, they had me teach them a bunch of exercises for about 15 minutes - to have all 42 of them following along with lunges, pushups, squats, jumping jacks, stretches was too fun! The staff always have Ginny and I serve the kids some of their meals - to have a bunch of adorable, hungry kids line up and get dished out freshly cooked, healthy food out of the biggest bowl you’ve ever seen (think bathtub-size) is quite an experience. We also sponsored 100 winter blankets both for the Shiloh kids and for street kids/kids from the villages nearby, so we got to hand those out and it was too sweet! The kids all call us James Uncle and Ginny Auntie, and we know so many more of their names this time around. Ginny had a special time painting the girls’ nails on our last day there, and I played lots of games with all the boys. Sunday evening, all of the kids took turns putting on performances for everyone - from reciting scripture, doing traditional tribal dances to a “bible character fashion show.” They also took this time to put us up in front of everyone, two of the girls washed our feet with water and oil, put flower veils on us and shower us with parting gifts, cards, paper flowers, etc. To be loved on, honored and blessed by all of these kids is difficult to process; it makes your heart just want to burst. They are full of the love of Jesus, and you can feel God’s delight in their midst.

One last surprise for us was getting to join a monthly gathering of 20 or so young adults at Alex & Sunita’s home, high school and
college age - the next generation of Church leaders. I got to share a message with them, and Ginny and I led a couple of songs.

Alex is who we first met in Birmingham back in November 2024 to share Ginny’s dream and begin to learn what God might be calling us to. From the beginning of our relationship, Alex has faithfully, and without any strings attached, served us in following God’s leading in Deoghar/Athmuria (the dream village). Everett Mission has endless opportunities and needs for the Church to support what they do, as they operate completely from faith/God’s provision, yet Alex is 100% selfless in facilitating our purposes elsewhere - helping us as a guide/translator, making our travel throughout India seamless, being the liaison in Deoghard negotiating land, lining up contractors and materials - whatever we feel the God is leading us in. I love his analogy in building the wall of Jerusalem in the Kingdom of God: “I would never try to hinder the building of the wall in one location in order to build up the part that I myself am working on. We are all building God’s wall and He provides everywhere it is needed.”
Ginny and I both feel a tremendous amount of respect for, and are inspired by, Alex, Sunita and Dolly in their faithful service to God and their servant leadership to others. It has been a tremendous, and unexpected, gift to Ginny and I to get to “sit at their feet” and just learn. Each of them grew up in an orphanage together, and have such a colorful story of God’s redemption and restoration that allows them to lead this ministry with a significant amount of wisdom, empathy and integrity. It’s an honor for us to have them as friends and truly be a part of their family.

Goal: Raise $17,000 for roof construction over orphans and vulnerable women in India
Earlier this year we (James & Ginny) spent some days at the Shiloh Residency in Pakur, India, where our friends at Everett Mission have given a home to 40 orphaned children, ages 3 to 16 years old. These kids are thriving, full of life and clearly very loved - our hearts are still very much with them.
Everett Mission is continuing to serve the most vulnerable in their community in creative ways, and building a second story above the Shiloh Residency which will be a "Women's Pregnancy Crisis and Empowerment Center," giving women a safe place to go during pregnancy, birth and postpartum, as well as a place to invest in life and trade skills.
They are currently out of funds to continue construction, and a a roof on the second level yet, the children's home ceiling is beginning to have water damage from rain. We can't let the roof over these kids' heads be compromised, and simultaneously want to speed the progress on providing a safe place for local women to protect their and their baby's lives.
I'm partnering with Alter Ego Running on a special order of "BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR" hats and, of $50 with every dollar going to this project. They are high quality, performance running hats; I have one I wear in work settings almost daily and it is my favorite hat I own. Our target to send to the children's home is $17,000, so please consider adding as much as you feel led to on top of the $50, and remember that you've invested in the lives of no-longer-orphaned children and vulnerable mothers & infants in India, every time you wear it. Your purchase will be considered a tax-deductible donation to our nonprofit, Door of Hope.

Thank you for being who you are, and for joining us in "being a good neighbor!"
April 2024
I know many of you have been waiting for an update on our trip to India! I’ll do my best to summarize with limited vocabulary for all that God is doing in us and through us. India is one of the most hospitable and generous places I have been, and it’s beautiful culture saturates every street and home with vibrant colors. There is also such overwhelming need for so many... in a country of 1.4 billion people God gave me a dream about one particular village of 700 people! The way that Jesus cares and loves every single person on earth is unfathomable… and yet he longs to share his heart with us. What a privilege! We were able to visit two different ministries, one in Pakur, and the other in Deoghar (near the village.)
What comes to mind when you think about the global church? That is a question I didn’t really know how to answer before embarking on our recent trip to India. I think that for many in the western church we read about the heroes of our faith and yet can remain unaware of how to truly make a difference in such an overwhelming sea of needs in the world. As a majority, and I’m speaking of the western church—our privilege often goes unchallenged and our resources are utilized to suit preferences rather than serve the most vulnerable, those trapped in cycles of poverty, and the persecuted church of Jesus. These things are on the forefront of God’s heart and he is calling his church to shift our priorities and values in such a way that our lives begin to truly touch purpose, touch heaven, and invest in the kingdom that is coming. So let me share some real faces with you!
This family lives in a city called “Deoghar”. It’s translated meaning: “The house of the gods.” It is a very spiritual place…one that is almost altogether devoid of knowing Jesus and filled with hindu temples, shrines, and altars. Alfred has been pastoring there for 14 years, despite his physical disability, and faithfully serving the small group of believers and meeting in their homes. We had the honor of visiting their humble 2 room home as well as the land that they have acquired for a future church building. We were able to meet many new friends who are part of that local congregation as well! God gave us the book of Nehemiah as encouragement for this specific work that he is doing.
“And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.” Nehemiah 2:18.

Meet Alfred (far right), his wife Sirin (red and white), and their son James (to my left).

We worshiped Jesus together in Hindi, prayed over the land, and ultimately committed to helping this community build a center for worship and prayer, as well as a gathering place for distribution of resources and sharing the gospel message to the surrounding areas.
As many of you know, God gave me a dream in the night last September that forever changed my life, showing me a small rural village called “Athmuria.” This church, when completed, will be about 5 miles from this village. It not only will serve as a place for the believers to gather, but also will be a parsonage for Alfred and his family to live above on the second story.
Here you can see the one small room that is currently built on the property. They are envisioning expanding the building to the entirety of the lot, as well as a second story above. Afterwards, we were able to locate and walk through the village Athmuria, asking if there were any christians who lived there. We could not find one, although one of the women from the church lives a half mile from there! There is also no school in the vicinity, and because the literacy rate and education is lacking, the cycles of poverty continue and crime rates are high. When I shared my dream with the locals there, they said Athmuria is the worst part of the whole city. Of course God would want to transform the darkness and bring his light and kingdom to that place!
It’s incredibly difficult and maybe impossible to put into words what God did in us on a personal level, but when we left there we knew that he was calling us to support, encourage, pray, and give financially to this place and these faithful people. It was also clear that God was looking for partnership to do long term work in that region. I believe Jesus is looking for those who he can call friends who are not seeking their own gain, but his gain. And I believe his word that says,
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14.

“How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” Romans 10:14-15
It is a profoundly eye-opening, visceral experience for a westerner like me to see a goat being sacrificed in real time to hindu gods laying in it’s own puddle of blood with incense diffusing. Passages of scripture suddenly just came alive in ways I never could quite grasp before. If there is one thing I am sure of, it is that God is burning with a passionate desire for those precious people to know that he has already sent a sacrifice, once and for all, in his Son.
As we have just celebrated the resurrection of Christ, let us remember our brothers and sisters who live in a world so very different than ours. That same Christ is alive and well moving amongst his church and building a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Let us think often of those who persevere under persecution and yet remain steadfast, generous, hospitable, and humble. And to echo the words of count zinzendorf and the moravian missionaries, “May the Lamb receive the reward of his suffering!”
It will take around $25,000 American dollars to build this church building, and then from there we can only watch in wonder at what God will do through his body of believers who are willing to make him known and love those around them. Will you consider partnering with us? You can now make a tax-deductible donation through our non-profit called “Door of Hope” (“Aasha Ka Dvaar”) - ensuring that those we are supporting will receive these funds directly.
UPDATE August 2025: We now have 23k for the construction of the building! We are also desiring to help this community purchase a different plot of land, as they cannot build on their current lot due to some real estate complications. We will know more in the coming
weeks about how much it will cost for the purchase this new plot of land. (Also, this new plot of land is only 1.5 miles from Athmuria!)
EVERETT MISSION, PAKUR.
We also want to introduce you to Everett Mission, run by Alex and Sunita Sam. Alex served as our in-country guide and translator during our stay in India. Alex and his family live in Pakur, India, and run a children’s home and school as well. Alex and Sunita were raised in an orphanage themselves, and they have worked hard to create a new experience that is full of life for these precious children to experience family care, and experience the love of God.
They are endeavoring to establish a women’s empowerment center as well on their property above the children’s home. They have started building but still need a roof to cover the structure for it to be complete. This will allow women to receive pregnancy care and give birth in a safe and sacred atmosphere, as well as teaching them life skills such as sewing, as to make a living for themselves. There will also be additional rooms for the staff in this second story addition. We have seen how much life, joy, and peace abound at Everett Mission and we know that this is good ground to sow into. The children there are so well loved and cared for, their education is priority, and God has blessed them with a vision to expand their capacity.
Shiloh Residency with the women’s empowerment center on the second story, unfinished. To your right you can see the building that is being completed for the new school on their own property for the children. We were so incredibly blessed by Alex and Sunita and their staff during our time there.
You can visit their website to learn more about Everett Mission here: https://everettmission.org/
Please pray and consider if you are able to participate in bringing lasting impact and change to these communities. Every dollar will go directly to these precious people and the visions that God has given them.
We love and appreciate all of your support.
In Jesus, Ginny and James Rodgers
